Everything You Need To Know: Pain Levels, Before Care and After Care

Updated: May 22

In this post, I want to dive into the essentials of getting permanent makeup done: beforecare, aftercare, and managing pain levels for permanent makeup. Recently, Jessica tattooed my eyebrows, sparking the perfect opportunity to share the realities of PMU work. Specifically, I underwent microblading in 2021 and now sport Nano brows in 2024. For a detailed comparison between microblading and Nano brows, dive into our comprehensive guide "Everything You Need To Know: Microblading, Nano Brows, Powder Brows, and Combination Brows.

Before your appointment

Beforecare used to be a breeze for me, requiring minimal effort. However, it's important to note that beforecare varies depending on your routine and preferences. At Eclipse, we've got a handy "Before You Book" page on our website that covers all the essentials, including policies, beforecare, and aftercare. Today, though, I'll focus mainly on beforecare and aftercare.

First things first, let's talk about showering. I highly recommend showering the day before or right before your appointment to avoid getting your brows wet afterward. This simple step can make a big difference in maintaining your new brows.

If you're particular about your brow shape and have a favorite brow artist, it's totally cool to visit them before your appointment. This helps ensure your artist understands your preferences and can tailor the treatment accordingly.

Now, if you're a makeup lover like me, don't worry about showing up to your appointment with makeup on, especially if you have a specific look you're aiming for. Your artist will appreciate the insight into your preferred style.

A few important notes for those on blood thinners or using accutane: remember to stop blood thinners 24 hours before your appointment and accutane a year before scheduling. This ensures optimal results and reduces any risks associated with the procedure.

If you're a Retinol user, it's best to pause its use at least a month to a month and a half before your appointment. This helps avoid any interference with the pigment's ability to penetrate the skin effectively.

Lastly, come prepared with some dates in mind for your touch-up appointment in the next 2-3 months. This proactive approach makes scheduling a breeze and minimizes the need for rescheduling, ensuring you maintain those perfect brows without any hassle.

Does it Hurt?

The age-old question before getting permanent makeup tattoos: "Does it hurt?" Everyone seems to have a different answer. Having had microblading done years ago, it's become somewhat of a distant memory for me. However, I can shed some light on the experience.

First things first, you do get numbed before your appointment, which definitely takes the edge off the pain. Once you're settled in, you'll discuss your goals with your artist before the numbing process begins, lasting about 15 minutes. Then, your artist will stencil out your brows and start the first pass.

I'll be honest, the first pass was the most intense part for me, but on a pain scale of 1 to 10, I'd rate it between a 2 and 4. It's definitely not the worst pain I've ever experienced. I found focusing on my breathing and even wiggling my toes helped distract me from the sensation.

After the first pass, I had a moment to catch my breath while my artist prepared for the second pass. Jessica, my artist, also uses a numbing agent while wiping away the pigment, which further reduces discomfort.

Surprisingly, I even dozed off during the second pass. The pain level dropped to zero, and I was completely relaxed. Jessica and I shared a laugh at the end of the appointment when I mentioned how surprised I was to have fallen asleep during the process.

Overall, while getting permanent makeup tattoos isn't entirely painless, it's certainly manageable. Just keep in mind that it's a tattoo, so a bit of discomfort is to be expected. But trust me, it's nothing you can't handle, and the results are well worth it!

After my transformation

Aftercare is key to ensuring your new brows heal beautifully. At Eclipse, we provide you with an aftercare kit containing instructions, a wipe, and a balm to help you through the process.

For the next 7 days post-appointment, gently cleanse your brows with a damp cloth or towel, then apply the provided balm in the morning and night. It's crucial to avoid submerging your brows underwater, whether it's in the shower, sauna, pool, or at the beach.

Another tip: get your brows shaped before your appointment to resist the urge to pluck, thread, or wax afterward. And don't forget to shield your freshly tattooed brows from prolonged sun exposure.

In the rare event of swelling, icing the area is perfectly acceptable. If you have any concerns or wish to make adjustments, jot them down to discuss during your touch-up appointment.

Speaking of touch-ups, we'll schedule yours during your first appointment, so have some dates in mind.
